World Chagas Disease Day
World Chagas Disease Day is observed every year on 14 April. This disease is also called American trypanosomiasis/silent/silent disease. The purpose of celebrating this day is to increase public awareness and visibility of the resources needed for the prevention, control or eradication of Chagas disease. This year the day was observed under the theme ‘Finding and reporting every case to defeat Chagas disease’.
This disease is called a silent or silent disease because no symptoms are seen when this infected disease occurs. Not only this, the patient himself does not initially realize that he is getting infected with this disease. Around 6-7 million people worldwide are infected with Chagas disease, of which 10,000 people die each year. Given the severity of the disease, it has been included in 11 official global public health campaigns identified by the World Health Organization.
History:
In the 72nd World Health Assembly held on 24 May 2019, the World Health Organization approved the celebration of World Chagas Disease Day on 14 April every year. Thus the first World Chagas Disease Day was observed on April 14, 2020. The day is named after the Brazilian doctor Carlos Ribeiro Justiniano Chagas because he was the one who diagnosed the first case of the disease on April 14, 1909.
