About the Examination Process
In order to get selected into these coveted services, candidates have to appear in the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) and should pass a three-phase selection process. The three phases are the Preliminary Exam (Prelims), Main Examination (Mains) and Viva Voice (Interview).
Plan of Examination
The Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission Services Examination consist of two successive stages:
- HPPSC(Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination; and
- HPPSC(Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various Services and posts.
- Preliminary Exam
- The exam will have two papers of 200 marks each and a total of 400 marks.
- Each paper will be of 200 marks.
- There will be a negative marking of ⅓ marks of the prescribed marks per question.
- No deductions are done for unanswered questions.

- Main Written Exam
- The Main exam will have 9 papers.
- English (Paper-I) and Hindi (Paper-II) are of qualifying nature.
- There will be a choice of optional subjects for the candidates.
- The optional subject chosen, will have two papers under it.

Viva-Voce/ Personality Test
The last stage in the selection process is the Viva-Voce. The viva-voce is conducted for 150 marks by the Commission. Candidates should be aware of the local languages spoken in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Centric issues of the state, and other basic regional information. The final list of candidates selected for the HPAS post mainly depends on the Mains Exam and the Viva-Voce.
